Your Role:

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking to hire a Medical Laboratory Scientist II, who will report to a Team Leader in the VUMC Diagnostic Core and Chemistry Laboratories, and who will have overall diagnostic bench-work responsibilities with supporting patient testing in the following cross-training disciplines - Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Toxicology, Body Fluids, Esoteric, Serology, and Urinalysis testing, all which are essential in supporting Vanderbilt’s Clinical Pathology Services. VUMC’s diagnostic Core laboratory employees work with highly sophisticated automated specimen processing systems and LIS, in a academic hospital setting.

The Medical Laboratory Scientist 2 Performs routine clinical pathology testing appropriate to cytogenetic laboratory services under occasional guidance. The MLS II is responsible to accurately record results and assure timely delivery of results. The MLS II has the authority, responsibility and accountability for the accurate performance of laboratory test methodologies. These tests are used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and the evaluation of the patient's response to treatment. The MLS II applies clinical knowledge to achieve accurate clinical test results which leads to quality patient care outcomes. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Providespatient-focused care in a clinical setting through the accurateperformance of routine and complex tests through the pre-analytic,analytic and post-analytic stages.

  • Performsqualitative and quantitative analytical procedures, including reagentpreparation and appropriate quality control, according to requiredprotocols, with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Demonstratesknowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments and theirinterrelationships as well as physiological conditions affecting testresults.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES:

DIAGNOSTIC TESTING (NOVICE): - Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate diagnostic testing in practical applications of moderate difficulty.

DATA ANALYSIS - (NOVICE): - Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate data analysis in practical data analysis applications of moderate difficulty. Navigates within established technology environments to locate, validate, extract, and format data for data analysis. Able to modify and run queries and standard reports from data tools and provide to users. Can identify data values and data sources. Is familiar with data modeling. Is able to interview business customers to elicit data requirements and understand the relationships between data items.

EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE - (NOVICE): - Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate the ability to maintain equipment, products, or systems in practical applications of moderate difficulty. Assures that parts inventory is sufficient.

QUALITY ASSURANCE - (NOVICE): - Has provided continuous analysis and evaluation of assignment work processes, constantly striving for improvement in the way tasks and activities are accomplished by questioning their value to the process and contributing creative solutions. PositionQualifications

Required:

  • MLS or CLS Certification withASCP or AMT and eligibility to obtain Medical Technologist (MT) Licensure in the state of Tennessee

  • Diagnostic laboratory exposure withhigh volume automated specimen handling systems, as part of the qualitative andquantitative analysis of human specimens

  • Attention to detail, ability towork well under pressure with tight turnaround times, and ability to adapt in adiverse, team-based culture

Preferred:

  • Successfulcompletion of CAHEA or NAACLS accredited Medical Technology program or BSfrom accredited institution with major in biological, chemical, physicalor clinical laboratory science and ASCP technologist generalist orcategorical certification or equivalent certification; or equivalenteducation and experience per CLIA and TN Medical Laboratory Board(1200-06-01-.22) for personnel performing high complexity testing withabnormal specimens

  • DiagnosticLaboratory Quality Control evaluation, instrument maintenance, and chemistryanalyzers troubleshooting

Position Shift:

Monday-Friday 2 nd Shift, 3pm-11:30pm CST, every 3 rd weekend rotations
