The Division of Hematology and Oncology conducts research and treats all types of adult cancers including solid tumor cancers and hematological (blood) disorders, as well as coagulation disorders and non-cancerous blood diseases. With over 80 faculty members representing a broad range of professional training and expertise, our dedicated team of professionals is committed to cancer care through
research to better understand and treat cancers;
state-of-the-art patient care and personalized cancer therapy;
clinical trials, including Phase I drug development with subsequent Phase II and Phase III testing;
training future cancer doctors and researchers; and
cancer chemotherapy, pharmacology, and biological therapy with an emphasis on solid tumors.
It is a 27-bed unit. Often the patients are coming from surgery. They may also be admitted for symptom control. It is considered a general care unit for oncology patients. Chemotherapy is administered for the hematology patients. Patient to nurse ratios are 1:3 days and 1:4 nights. The unit shares patients with Myelosuppression (stem cell replacement) from time to time. Average length of patient stay is 5.7 days but can be 28 days.
The nurses will be called to utilize their technical skills as well as emotional strengths due to the nature of the patient illness.
