Department/Unit Summary

The Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at Vanderbilt has a long and rich history of excellence in teaching, clinical service, and research. We are highly regarded for our medical school teaching. Our residents have ample opportunities to develop their teaching skills in the medical school, the medical technology program, and the Belmont University physical therapy program.

Opportunities abound for upper level students to participate in the diagnostic and investigative activities of this department. We offer a post-sophomore year fellowship in pathology for highly motivated medical students who wish to explore pathology in even greater depth.

Our Ph.D. programs in Cellular and Molecular Pathology and Microbiology and Immunology are thriving . Our collaborative efforts in personalized medicine in cancer, pharmacogenomics and the creation of Diagnostic Management Teams are at the “leading edge” of a revolution in the practice of pathology. JOB DESCRIPTION:

Established laboratory seeks a Research Assistant I Term to assist with lab maintenance, such as ordering and stocking of supplies, and to provide, under direct supervision, support for a specified research project. Experience with Microbiology, Immunology, or Molecular Biology techniques would be beneficial but not necessary.

Key Functions and Expected Performances:

  • Under supervision, run experiments, assays, and record results

  • Read and follow experimental protocols (May include animal handling, tissue culture, etc.)

  • Compile and communicate results to supervisor

  • Follow University safety protocols (May include use of combustibles, radioactivity, toxic material, and/or carcinogenics)

  • Perform calculations involving molarity, % solutions, an serial dilution

Prepare and operate equipment in experimental procedures

  • May include blood gas analyzer, centrifuge, pH meter, spectrophotometer, autoclave, scintillation counter, electrophoresis unit, analytical balance, etc

  • Maintain and repair equipment according to manufacturer and university guidelines.

Ensure laboratory is prepared for experiments

  • Maintain inventories

  • Maintain sterile conditions as required

  • Prepare reagents

  • Clean equipment

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Bachelors Degree(or equivalent experience)
