Vanderbilt University Medical Center Research Asst II-Pediatric Pulmonary-FT Days in Nashville, Tennessee

The Division of Pulmonary Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to join a productive laboratory to assist with research on the cell biology of pulmonary fibrosis and genetic lung diseases in adults and children.

The position will require performance of a combination of molecular and cell biology as well as designated work in maintaining and performing experiments using transgenic mouse colonies.

Under moderate supervision the Research Assistant II will:

  • Understand and perform routine procedures including mouse colony management and standard PCR.

  • Perform real time PCR, western blotting, ELISA, immunostaining, and cell culture.

  • Become proficient with tissue dissection/animal injections.

  • Become proficient in proper processing and catologing of human samples for genetic, genomic, and proteomic research

  • Assist in other laboratory and research functions.

Key Functions and Expected Performances:

1. Under moderate supervision:

  • Understand and follow experimental protocols, including animal handling, cell isolation and tissue harvest, cell culture, and molecular assays

  • Set up, conduct experiments, and continue research projects following protocols

  • Prepare and operate equipment in experimental procedures and maintain laboratory inventory and equipment

2. Independently:

  • Follow University safety protocols, and laboratory protocols including maintaining sterile conditions as required

  • Maintain inventories and process and catalog specimens

  • Perform accurate calculations in the preparation of reagents and solutions

  • Keep detailed documentation of all procedures and protocols in a lab notebook and electronically as appropriate

  • Compile and communicate results to PI and lab manager, including the appropriate recording of data and reporting of standard or variant results

  • Recognize and communicate potential problems and suggest solutions

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus minimum 24 months experience; Masters Degree preferred

  • Basic laboratory skills and prior molecular biology laboratory experience is required.

  • A degree in Biochemistry, Cell Biology or related science field is preferred.

  • Previous research experience working with mice is preferred.

  • Required skills: strong analytical and communication skills; the ability to work independently; computer skills including word processing, data entry, statistical analysis, and graphic presentation.

Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) and 2 years experience

  • Occasional: Noise: May include exposure to occupational noise levels which equal or exceed an 8-hr time-weighted average of 85 decibels, requiring enrollment in VUMC's Hearing Conservation Program which includes training, use of hearing protection, and periodic audiometry.

  • Continuous: Communication: Expressing or exchanging written/verbal/electronic information.
