Unit Summary

Welcome to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Inpatient Adult Orthopaedic Unit. The inpatient unit is physically located in Vanderbilt University Hospital 10 th floor (10 South) and Medical Center North, 6 th Floor of the Round Wing. We provide care for Adult patients who have elected to have Orthopaedic surgery (e.g. Total Joint Replacement) and non-elective Orthopaedic Trauma patients. Orthopaedic services lines include: Foot and Ankle, Hand and Upper Extremity, Hip Preservation, Joint Replacement, Orthopaedic Oncology, Orthopaedic Trauma, and Orthopaedic Spine.

We strive to deliver Patient and Family centered care by the collaborative, team-focused efforts of an interdisciplinary healthcare provider team. The Leadership Team is comprised of a Medical Director, Associate Nursing Officer, Unit Manager, Clinical Staff Leaders and Nurse Educator. The unit also has a dedicated Staff; members include Registered Nurses, Patient Flow Nurse, Care Partners, and Medical Receptionist. Various support resources are also available, such as, case management, social work, and therapy service (e.g. PT and OT).

We are committed to providing excellent service to our patients and a supportive and caring work environment for our staff. Our patient focus is to provide excellent care to all our patients, meeting their needs and requests to the best of our abilities.

A typical shift for our nurses includes working with an interdisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment with between 6 to 12 surgical admissions and discharges each day. Working in Orthopaedics gives new nurses an opportunity to begin their professional life. Some find they have a true love of the orthopaedic population and make this their home. Those who choose to explore other avenues of opportunities take with them skills that they can apply to all aspects of nursing, such as time management, pain management, and customer service.

We pride ourselves on our teamwork and our close working relationship with therapy services which is integral to our success in preparing patients to return to their homes or to move to the next level of care.

Your Role

Applies the nursing process to plan and implement the care of patients, including patient and family education and continuum of care planning. Effectively communicates pertinent patient/family information to the health care team. Collaborates in establishing patient goals and evaluates progress to ensure effective outcomes. Furthers professional growth by engaging in learning activities according to the Board of Nursing standards.
