Position Summary:

The Senior Director of Development reports to the SVP of Development Children’s Health and Community Development and is a member of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) Development team. This position is responsible for providing day to day leadership in the areas of strategic fundraising that include Children’s Miracle Network, Community Development, signature national fundraising, Cause Marketing, Youth and Volunteer Engagement and individual giving. The Senior Director will provide leadership and strategic direction in the creation, development, execution and evaluation of fundraising efforts in these areas that support the mission of VUMC.

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Provide leadership, management and oversight of events and team members responsible for the fundraising activities.

  • Development of strategic fundraisings plans, implement plans in collaborative process with team to maximize fundraising results and develop and maintain strong relationships with donors and community partners.

  • Provide oversight and accountability for financial controls related to fundraisings efforts, including evaluation of efficacy of all partnerships regularly .

  • Responsible for the identification of individual donors through fundraising partnerships and work in partnership with other gift officers.

  • Work closely with Corporate and Foundation leadership to identify, secure and increase support from these constituents.

  • Work with the Office of Engagement to develop partnerships with the entertainment industry for marketing and philanthropic related purposes .

  • Collaborate with Digital and Direct Marketing and Community Engagement colleagues in VUMC Development to leverage resources and maximize donor engagement.

  • Work closely with Finance, Marketing and Risk Management leaders to ensure that scope of work and processes meet VUMC policies and guidelines.

  • Manage and monitor staff to ensure approved events and programs are compliant with Community Development guidelines and VUMC Development finance and gift processing guidelines.

  • Manage a portfolio of relationships that may include individual and organizational donors that support fundraising events, activities and individual giving.

  • Manage the third party event clearance process for VUMC.

  • Take an active and visible role in VUMC Development activities, training opportunities, and represent Children’s Health on appropriate task groups and/or committees.

  • Build the professional development and budget of the Community Development team.

  • Assist with leadership around staff engagement

  • Perform other duties as assigned


Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) and 3 years’ experience required

Preferred Experience/Skills:

  • Demonstrated success in leading others in successful fundraising

  • Strong team management and mentoring skills

  • Five or more years of development fundraising experience, with proven results at the individual and team leader levels.

  • Demonstrated success in volunteer management, corporate relations, planning, organizing, executing, evaluating and monitoring fundraising efforts, and project enhancement and expansion.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to maintain solid working relationships with corporate, business and community partners, volunteers, faculty, staff and leaders in the Medical Center.

  • Ability to exhibit enthusiasm, persuasion and good judgment in interactions with others.

  • Excellent management and organizational skills.

  • Strong communication skills including public speaking and written.

  • Focused and results-oriented to readily identify priorities and goals and consult with donors to resolve issues throughout event, activities and project stages.

  • Familiarity with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Children’s Hospitals and/or health care preferable

  • Ability to motivate prospective donors, faculty, providers and fellow staff to reach ambitious goals

  • Excellent judgment and sensitivity to interpersonal and organizational dynamics

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a goal-oriented team environment

  • Must be proficient in MS Office software product (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and Outlook.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time position. Evenings and weekend work will be required.
